Specialty Measuring Guides

1) Start your measurement a minimum of 2" above the glass (3" recommended) and measure down 2" below the glass. This will provide enough room to mount installation brackets at the top and hold down brackets at the bottom. The extra height above your window will also allow the blind to stack up above the glass and provide a less obstructed view.

2) Measure the width of the glass and at a minimum of 1" (2" recommended) to both sides of the glass. The door handle may constrain the maximum amount of overlap that can be added to the width.

A cut-out is a rectangular area removed from a blind or shade to avoid obstruction. This cut-out is normally from one of the corners or from the bottom. A tile back splash or window air conditioner are two common examples of obstructions that may benefit from a cut-out.

Cut-outs are an additional charge. Not all products allow cut-outs. Please contact our customer service team to determine if the product you are interested in allows cut outs.

1) Measure your window normally for an inside or outside mount. This will give you the overall width and overall height.

2) Next measure the required cut-in from the side of the shade followed but the cut-out height.

3) In addition, mark your measurements on a sketch of the cut-out to ensure the order is processed correctly.

A bay window is a series of windows with at least three sides that projects from the exterior wall of a house.

1) First determine the depth of the product you are mounting and use this for the width of your poster board. You can obtain this depth on blind product pages or through customer service at 1-877-388-0336 .

2) Next cut out two pieces of poster board the width of the product depth by 12" long. If extra clearance necessitates the use of extension brackets or spacer blocks, include this extra clearance to the width dimension of the poster board.

3) Place the strips you have cut as shown below. By placing strip "A" in the left angle first and bring together strip in "A" and "B" until the front corners of the poster board meet you will obtain the correct angle. Mark points "A" and "B". Repeat for strips "C" and "D".

4) Measure from the left corner of "B" to the right corner of "C" to obtain the width measurement of the center window treatment. Measure from from the right corner of "A" outward to the desired width to obtain the width measurement of the left window treatment. Measure from left corner of "D" outward to the desired width to obtain the width measurement of the right window treatment.

5) Height of the window treatments is determined in the normal horizontal blind fashion.

With two windows which meet in a corner, two shades butt against each other. One shade is the "butt" shade and the other is the "bypass" shade as shown in the left diagram.

1) Measure each shade separately using normal horizontal blind procedures described here.

2) Once completed simply subtract headrail depth from the butt shade to obtain the proper ordering width.

3) With outside mounted shades allow for overlap on the sides and the bottom.

Some window fashions such as soft verticals cannot use the Butt and Bypass. They are then measured to meet in the corner.

1) Begin by measuring the width of both openings to the common corner.

2) Now deduct the necessary depth of the treatment from the width of each measurement so they will meet in the corner but not overlap.

3) If the use of spacer blocks or extension brackets is necessary for extra clearance on outside mounts, add the amount of extra clearance to the deduction.

4) Order the width less the deduction for each window.

Outside Mount

1) Measure from the far left edge of the trim to the far right edge of the trim

2) For wood blinds, faux wood blinds, aluminum blinds, and other products with end mount brackets take a 1/4" deduction from the measurement to allow room to mount the end brackets onto the trim.

3) To expose some of the trim, measure the window opening and then add the amount of trim you would like covered to each side of the window opening size.

4) To expose all of your trim measure the window opening.

5) Measure the height from the top edge of the window trim to the bottom edge of the window trim or the window sill. To mount the blind above the window trim start your measurement at least 2" above the top edge of the trim and measure down to the bottom edge of the window trim or window sill.

Inside Mount
